Bill Kempers has done a major rebuild on a Merlin model GT. C-IMGT was previously a demonstrator (Sun n’ Fun, Oskosh etc.) for MacAir Industries in Baldwin and was purchased by Bill and Helen in 1993. Floats and skis were added in 1996.
The rebuild has been extensive and has included replacing the 582 Rotech engine with a Rotech 912 UL, installing a new engine mount, new cowling, new windshield, new instrument panel, new carpeting, new seat covers, and a new storage compartment in the rear. Elaine Kermen designed and made the seat covers and the storage covers. The motor, cowling, and some instruments were purchased from Wayne Winters at Blue Yonder Aviation in Calgary. Wayne is the Merlin dealer and builder for Canada.
Bill started the project in May 2004, and with the able assistance of his experienced buddy Yvon Kermen, the task was completed in January 2005. Since Yvon had already installed a Rotech engine in another project, it was very helpful to have him involved and be able to call on his expertise for this installation.
Bill is very happy with the performance of the new engine. Take off power is now 5800 rpm, cruise is 5300 rpm, and he reports that there is no problem getting 100 mph at 5300 rpm.
This was certainly an extensive rebuild project but Bill feels that it was all worth while and he is very pleased with the outcome.
